![]() ![]() Importance Stress among health care professionals is well documented. Some hospitals actually have chief wellness officers (CWO) who study areas that contribute to stress and burnout and search for ways to reduce or eliminate them. Massachusetts general hospital, Mayo Clinic, and Kaiser Permanent all have successful peer support programs. They were grateful for ‘checking in’ on them. Sometimes an empathetic ear from a colleague is all that is needed to prevent the early stages of anxiety or depression from progressing to more serious stages.Īs a member of a peer support system in my community hospital I have been in email contact with several front line colleagues during the Coronavirus. ![]() ![]() Peer support programs consist of in-hospital teams of health care providers who volunteer to make themselves available to their colleagues who may feel overwhelmed by the stresses of their work and need to talk to someone.
